(KMJ) A domestic violence victim is suing her ex-boyfriend for federal civil rights violations.
Desiree Martinez filed the lawsuit Monday against her ex-boyfriend Clovis police officer Kyle Pennington, his parents and the Clovis and Sanger Police Departments for what she says was more than a year of abuse.
Her attorney says the Clovis and Sanger police departments did not take the required steps to help Martinez who discussed her plight – publicly – in a news conference. The lawsuit names specific employees and seeks unspecified damages.
The attorney also says Pennington’s father, a Sanger police officer, was legally required to report his son’s abuse and did not.
A Clovis police spokeswoman says the department takes allegations of domestic violence seriously.
Pennington resigned in 2013 even though he was found not guilty of false imprisonment and assault. The Penningtons declined to comment on the new case.
